Did you know?
Every year in the United
States, approximately 4 million babies are born to couples. This period
holds potential for great joy in parents’ lives; yet research shows that
within three years after the birth of a child, approximately two-thirds of
couples will experience a significant drop in relationship quality and have
a dramatic increase in conflict and hostility. Furthermore, many mothers
experience not only the baby blues, but also postpartum depression as well
as psychopathology. The result of these changes is compromised parenting
and decreased quality of the parent-infant relationship. Therefore, it is
critical to the health of young families that issues such as the dissolving
relationship quality are addressed. “Baby Makes Three” has been designed to
help in this process. Content is adapted from the Bringing Baby Home
Workshop developed by the Relationship Research Institute, a non-profit
research institute founded by John Gottman, PhD.
